A Final Analysis Of The 2013 Season

What a finish, right? Finally a BCS championship that isn’t a blowout. That’s refreshing. It capped an exciting season with some big surprises, big plays, big letdowns and big news. Let’s take a look at the ending of this great season of college football.

Biggest Surprise: That goes to Auburn. They received exactly 0 votes from the preseason AP and USA Today polls. No one gave them a chance in the SEC. They definitely came out of nowhere. Granted, it took two absolute miracle plays, but that’s why you play the games.

Runner’s Up: UCF, Duke and Lane Kiffin’s firing

Biggest Play: How do you choose? Hard to pick anything but Auburn’s miracle FG return for a TD to beat Alabama. Craziest play I’ve ever witnessed.

Runenr’s Up: Auburn’s crazy Hail Mary pass against Georgia, UCF receiver’s one handed diving catch and Florida State’s fake punt in the championship

Biggest Letdown: Lot’s of disappointing seasons this year. There were some big expectations for a lot of teams that simply failed to achieve. I would probably put Texas at the top of that list.

Runner’s Up: Texas A&M, USC, Florida and Michigan

Biggest News: That’s a no brainer to me. The biggest and best news that happened in 2013 is the announcement of a College Football Playoff. It’s going to be epic.

Runner’s Up: Lane Kiffin fired, Chris Petersen moves to Washington and Mack Brown resigning

Now for my final 2013 rankings. I look less at wins and losses and more at who would beat who head to head. This takes in to account Bowl results as well, and with that in mind, here’s my final ballot if I’m an AP voter:

1. Florida State
2. Michigan State
3. Auburn
4. South Carolina
5. Oregon
6. Oklahoma
7. Alabama
8. Missouri
9. Clemson
10. Stanford
11. UCF
12. Louisville
13. Ohio State
14. Baylor
15. UCLA
16. Oklahoma State
17. LSU
18. Notre Dame
19. Arizona State
20. USC
21. Wisconsin
22. Nebraska
23. Washington
24. Fresno State
25. Texas A&M

Now taking a look ahead at next season, this would be my preseason top 25 if I had to make a poll today. This is subject to change as players declare for the NFL draft and commit to different programs.

1. Florida State
2. Oregon
3. Oklahoma
4. Alabama
5. Michigan State
6. Auburn
7. Stanford
8. Ohio State
10. Missouri
11. USC
12. Wisconsin
13. LSU
14. Washington
15. Clemson
16. North Carolina
17. Ole Miss
18. Arizona State
19. Notre Dame
20. South Carolina
21. Iowa
22. Michigan
23. Arizona
24. Nebraska
25. Georgia

This will probably shift over time as we learn more about who will be playing where, but that’s a pretty solid list. Playoff prediction? I think Florida State will be the 1 seed and will face the 4 seed of Michigan State while the 2 seed of Oregon will face the 3 seed of Alabama. But that’s why they play the games. Chances are each of those will be wrong. But who cares, it’s the offseason, all we can do is speculate at this point. Can’t wait another 233 days for the next season to kickoff!
