The Ideal College Football World

We all know the current landscape of college football is, well, less than ideal. So what would make college football ideal? What things would need to change to bring equity and parity to our beloved sport? Surprisingly, not much. In fact, I would argue that a couple quick fixes from the NCAA and we would have a wondrous sport, not just a great one. What changes would I like to see? Let me break it down.

1. Get rid of and completely eliminate everything associated with the BCS.

This is an obvious one. The first step to curing the sport is removing the large, cancerous tumor known as the BCS. This money sucking machine has done little to benefit the sport as a whole or teams individually. It has helped make the rich guys a lot richer. But college football shouldn’t be about the money, even though it is. Let’s get rid of the BCS and at least pretend like its not all about the money.

2. Replace the current postseason model with a 16 team playoff and regular bowl games.

You can see my entire postseason proposal here. Basically, replace the BCS with a fair playoff that lets each conference send their champion, plus six at large bids for deserving teams. Much the same way the NCAA basketball tournament is determined.

3. Realign the conferences so that they make geographic sense.

Right now conference expansions and realignments are a hot topic. But what are conferences really trying to achieve? What’s best for them obviously, not what’s best for the sport. I realize they have other concerns and other sports to think about, but it’s not rocket science. If they all can’t figure out how to make reasonable conferences on their own, the NCAA should step in and do it for them. Here’s my proposal for a new conference realignment that makes sense.

You can’t really go wrong here. The world would be a better place if these were the conferences. So there you have it, three easy steps to make college football even more incredibly awesome than it already is. Will it ever happen? Probably not, but we can always hope…
