Another Solution to the BCS Mess

A comment was left on our last solution that perhaps we could try a 12 conference approach to college football. This puts 10 teams in each conference. This is potentially better as each team would then be forced to play all the teams in their conference, so I like it. Here’s how I think it would work:

As earlier stated, the WAC is geographically insane. If we are going to redraw the conferences, we need to still do something about the WAC. So here is our new conference rundown, with the new Big American Conference.

From here the same scenario can still play out. Let each conference determine its winner however they please. But at least each team is forced to play all the others. Let each champion into the playoff. Then you have 4 at large bids. If there is a tie for the conference champion, this would allow both in the tournament. This also cuts out the weekend of conference championship games, meaning the season is more manageable for everyone.

You now have a 16 team playoff. Every team has as good a chance to get in as the next. The BCS can still seed the 16 teams. Normal bowls can still be played at the normal time. This would be a really good, working solution for college football. Its unlikely the Big American conference will ever be formed, but hey, we can always dream.
