Ever notice how everyone at ESPN is an SEC cheerleader? Ever wonder why that is? Well let me explain in word and image. ESPN makes money when people turn on their station. People turn on their station when they are showing something people want to see. So ESPN wants to show what most people want to see. And when it comes to college football, a large region of the country shuts down on Saturdays: the South. Why do you think ESPN wants an SEC team in the title game every year? That’s what gets the most ratings. Except if it is between two SEC teams who already played it seems, since this was the lowest rated BCS title game ever. But to explain this in easy to understand terms, I took the liberty of revising the SEC logo to appear how the folks at ESPN see it.

If that doesn’t explain it, nothing will.

Well I started to watch last night’s BCS title game. But I stopped. I found The Bachelor to be far more entertaining than the “big boy” football I was being subjected to. Although based on the Twitter explosion after the game it wasn’t hard to know who won, or what the implications were. There was quite a vocal minority of people online hoping for a “split championship” to happen. For those who may not know, a split championship is when one team wins the USA Today poll and a different team wins the AP poll. Well, didn’t happen, but this just shows a huge, gaping flaw of college football that hampers it from being as popular and loved as it could be.

Let me be frank here, however: These bowls only serve to irritate us. The Cotton Bowl is a legitimate high-level bowl matchup, so it can stay during BCS week. The other two have no excuses being this close to the national title game. Let’s do this quickly:
Oh, because I was under the impression LSU had already played Alabama and beat them so…you know, didn’t think those two playing each other again was worth mentioning. And I suppose there are a few other trivial bowl games that no one knows about or cares about. So let’s be honest, 2011 for all intents and purposes is over.

So in a year during which the conference was derided for its mediocrity, the ACC wound up getting its first ever double invite to the BCS. All eyes will be on the performance of Virginia Tech and Clemson in the coming days, and it’s in the best interests of the conference to win both of these games, handily if possible. Given that one of the teams involved is the team to which I pledge my fan allegiance while another one is a hated rival school from the Big East, I am almost certainly the worst person to be doing this analysis. Michigan fans, I apologize in advance. West Virginia fans, I’d apologize, but I know you can’t read this anyhow.
Because the bowls were forced to split up between December 30 and 31st and January 2nd (Thanks, NFL. I’d hate for college football to have a tradition that lasts. You guys enjoy your prima donnas and their mic hogging antics), those days will get their own entries. This post will tackle the last round of utterly meaningless bowls, providing a convenient segue to December 29, when we get to watch the mostly meaningless bowls!
It’s not the most pleasant of postseasons, but hey, at least we get more college football, much of it consisting of teams we haven’t gotten to see all season. The only problem is, some of those teams have stayed under the radar for a freakin’ reason.
The holiday season brings presents, goodwill and peace, but for some college football fan bases it brings new hopes, new expectations and a shiny new coach to deck the halls of the athletic complex. Many schools have filled their vacancies with a new head coach, who holds the hopes and dreams of a fan base in his hands. There are recruits to woo, high school state championship games to watch to find the next diamond in the rough and coaches to hire during the bowl season. So with all of these occurring at many schools with new coaches, one has to ask what is going on at Arizona State.
