Don’t throw in the towel yet, Sloppy!! Your original playoff proposal is still the best out there and is still worth fighting for! I recognize that any type of playoff format is better than the trash we have now. I can understand that Sloppy would want to come up with a version that’s a bit less revolutionary, and thus a bit more practical. However, my philosophy is that anything worth doing is worth doing right. Any change to this system is going to be like pulling teeth, so we might as well go for the gusto. Once the doors are finally opened to change, we should do our best to get the best change put in place possible before they close again. Instead of swinging for a single, let’s go for the fence. Forgive me for using an analogy from the most boring sport ever invented, but it’s all that came to mind.

It’s no secret the BCS has been the greatest and worst thing to ever happen to college football. It has created the best of times (see Texas vs. USC and Boise State vs. Oklahoma) and it has brought us the worst of times (see most other BCS bowl games.) Whether you agree with us here at the Cafeteria or not, one thing is for sure, the BCS has given us all something to talk about. But here’s what really irks me… BCS stands for Bowl Championship Series. Series, huh? What exactly is the series of bowls that leads one to the championship? There are a series of bowl games and then the championship, but none have any relationship to the other. I’m going to be updating my college football playoff proposal and fixing that. I think I’ve come up with a pretty good system to replace the current BCS format, and here it is in a nutshell.
Normally it’s just boring baseball garbage and highlight after highlight of a home run, a strikeout or a diving catch. Yawn. Well this morning there was actually something about college football! I was so shocked I turned up the volume and paid attention. Looks like ESPN did a survey of over 130 college football players from both BCS and non-BCS teams. They found something interesting- college football players want a playoff!

The answer to this question is “yes.” Those of us who remember the old days of randomly assigned bowl games that were determined by your conference and not your record remember how bad that was. Remember in 1984 when BYU won the title? Washington wouldn’t even play them, opting for Oklahoma instead. BYU barely got past a 6-5 Michigan team to be voted national champions. That could never happen anymore. The teams at the top of the polls always play at the end of the year now. That’s better. But now things have gotten worse.

The Mountain West Conference, Conference USA and the Western Athletic Conference have spent the last few years attempting to position themselves as being the next conference to become a BCS conference. The MWC has been talked about in many circles, as the conference closest to becoming a BCS conference. This talk is the result of some MWC program’s exploits on the gridiron. The BCS formula is a complicated one that takes into account wins and losses versus other BCS conferences, final rankings and other criteria. It basically boils down to a numbers game. However, though the BCS likes to trumpet membership is performance based, truth is the number that the BCS cares about is the number that follows the dollar sign.

There is a lot of speculation right now about expansion and realignment, but no one seems to be noticing that fact that we are now halfway through a four year BCS cycle. What is that exactly? No one really knows that the 6 automatic qualifying conferences aren’t always a lock to be that way. Every four years the BCS evaluates the conferences and can have UP TO 7 automatic qualifiers. So just how has the MWC done thus far? Well, halfway through this cycle, they are certainly on target to get that auto bid starting in 2012.

Bill Hancock, executive director of the BCS, has a message for Congress: Back off! Representatives from Congress sent a letter to the BCS, inquiring as to how the system works, how revenue is distributed, etc. The BCS responded this week to Congress and told them university presidents, conference commissioners, coaches and athletic directors will work together with the NCAA to do what’s best for college football, so Congress should stay out of it. The response was 6 pages of explanation along with 6 more pages of graphs and figures. Well Bill Hancock and the rest of the BCS thugs, College Football Cafeteria (along with about 90% of all college football fans) has a message for you:
