Sorry it has been so long since the last post. Being the offseason and all there isn’t much going on. But today there was an article on ESPN about the NCAA President’s support of a playoff that needs mentioning. Oddly he only supports a 4 team playoff instead of 16 or 20 like is done at other levels of college football. This is because other levels of the sport play 10 or sometimes 11 game schedules, not 12 or 13 game schedules.

The BCS Cancels The NBA Season And Schedules Championship Game

In a puzzling display of stupidity, Bill Hancock, Executive Director of the Bowl Championship Series, called a press conference this morning to make a “special announcement” regarding professional basketball. Perplexed reporters from both college football and the NBA showed up, wondering what purpose could have possibly brought them together. Hancock quickly put the questions to rest when he boldly cut the NBA season short and declared the matchup for the championship game to be played in just over a month.

The Right Way To Do A Plus One Playoff

Everyone knows the BCS bigwigs are getting together and discussing the future of the BCS. Several topics will be on the table, such as bowl selection, automatic qualifiers and the plus one model. A plus one would be a good start, but 8 teams would be ideal. Still, if a plus one playoff is possible, we must jump on it. But we have to do it right. This is the right way to implement a plus one playoff model.

The Reason College Football Has No Playoff

The BCS is a terrible system of determining a champion. Under their logic, Germany won WWII. Just look at the strength of their opponents and all of those quality wins, several on the road. The BCS also tells us Virginia Tech is better than Clemson, even though they played two times, once at Virginia Tech, once at a neutral site, and Clemson whipped them both times. You see, the BCS is not a way of determining if one team is better than another. Clemson is a perfect example. Clearly a better team than Virginia Tech. BCS says not so. So why do we have it?

It is the bedrock argument the BCS uses against playoff proponents. Since we can’t agree on a format, we obviously don’t have a viable solution. Ok, so we don’t even know the preseason rankings for 2011 yet, but that’s ok, that means its way too early to project the BCS bowls for 2011, so that’s exactly what I’m going to do. See the advantage is if I’m wrong I can say “Who cares? I made those projections long before the season started.” And if I’m right I can say “See? I am an oracle of college football wisdom.” Win-win for me.

Many of you long time readers may recall an article a couple of years ago about Dick Bestwick. He is a columnist for the Athens Banner-Herald.
