The three independents in college football, Notre Dame, Army and Navy, have all been generally successful programs. Notre Dame especially has performed well, dominating much of the college football scene. Only Alabama claims to have more national championships than Notre Dame. In the ESPN prestige rankings, all three of these teams did well, with Notre Dame in the top 10. No one knows why they play as independents, or why Air Force doesn’t join the other military schools as an independent.
