Check out our new projections for the 2011 college football preseason rankings!

Everybody is looking for the 2009 college football preseason rankings. I’m just going to say now, the official AP Poll and USA Today Coaches Poll are not going to be released until a few weeks before the season starts. So if you are looking for the official 2009 NCAA football preseason rankings you can check back at this college football blog the beginning of August.

But that may not be entirely necessary. You see, everyone who is anyone has released their own 2009 preseason NCAA football rankings. Bloggers, sportswriters, columnists and everyone else on all sorts of college football blogs has made their picks for the 2009 preseason college football rankings. I went out there and found 12 of them. So you want to know what the preseason rankings are going to be this August? I can give you something that will be darn close by combining these 12 polls that are probably a good representation of how the actual AP pollsters will go.

Ok, here’s how we’ll do this. I’ll show you all 12 polls of preseason rankings I could get my hands on. Then I’ll give 25 points for a first place vote, 24 votes for second, 23 points for third, etc. I’ll add up how many points each team receives from these polls and give you the resulting top 25. Here we go:

I’m sure there are plenty of other preseason rankings out there, but this list will just have to do. Now as I said, I gave 25 points for a first place vote, 24 points for second, 23 points for third, etc. After tallying up all the results, here is my best guess at the 2009 preseason rankings when they are released in August. Point totals will be included, first place votes in (), and other receiving votes will be shown as well:

1. Florida (10) 298
2. Texas (2) 283
3. Oklahoma 271
4. USC 254
5. Alabama 237
6. Oklahoma State 219
7. LSU 212
8. Virginia Tech 207
9. Ohio State 205
10. Ole Miss 191
11. Georgia Tech 163
12. Penn State 150
13. Oregon 127
14. Georgia 121
15. Boise State 118
16. Florida State 113
17. California 102
18. Utah 91
19. Iowa 84
20. TCU 68
21. North Carolina 66
22. Pittsburgh 57
23. Notre Dame 45
24. Kansas 42
25. Texas Tech 40

Others receiving votes: Nebraska 29, Miami (FL) 23, BYU 18, Oregon State 18, Clemson 15, West Virginia 7, North Carolina State 6, Minnesota 5, Tennessee 5, Auburn 2, Boston College 2, East Carolina 2, South Florida 2, Arkansas 1, Vanderbilt 1

Now keep in mind, two of the actual AP voters have their polls included in this total, so it should be pretty close to this. I hope I’m wrong, as I always hate to see Notre Dame ranked in the preseason every year. They look pretty good except for Alabama. I don’t know how anyone can lose their starting quarterback and running back, along with the heart of their offensive line and be ranked so high. That’s ok, a first week trip to Atlanta against Virginia Tech should slide them down where they belong.

So there you have it, the 2009 preseason college football rankings, or at least the closest thing there is until August when the AP and USA Today release the official polls.

Good stuff man…. Great compilation

I posted it on my forum to get you some more exposure

For everyone who thinks Florida deserves number one because of them being in the mighty SEC, think on this- currently on Florida’s schedule you have ONE team that ended last season ranked. BYU has a total of FOUR teams on their schedule who ended ranked…three of them in the top ten!

If you look at schedules, an undefeated BYU should be ranked higher than an undefeated Florida, but you know that would never happen. Thats why rankings are stupid. Who care where Ole Miss is ranked right now. Who cares where LSU is ranked right now. Means nothing, because rankings are kind of dumb, preseason being the dumbest of all.

Flez is right though, Nebraska is a shoe in against Texas for the Big 12 title game. Should be a good one.

Brennan-

You guys will be the Clemson of last year and lay an egg. Okay, maybe not quite that bad. Perhaps the Missouri of last year. Or LSU. Or Auburn. It happens every year. There are at least three teams that are picked in the top 10, that are big time busts. That will be Ole Miss this year. Mark it in your book.

Watch out for the Huskers this year, may still be rebuilding but will definitely bust into the top 25. Probably take Notre Dame’s spot after they lose a couple of times (of course, I’ve seen ND teams that have 2-3 losses and are still rated above good undefeated teams).

Brennan my man, take deep breaths and get your feet back on the ground. Put out wharever you are smoking and get a grip. Firstly, Ole Miss is gonna be good…not that good. ‘Bama and The Bayou Bengals are gonna whoop you like a rented mule….in Oxford. Don’t be too hasty to put UT and Arkansas in your W column as well. And I’ll share somwthing else with ya….ya gonna have trouble in Columbia. Don’t forget last season, this average team strolled into Oxford…kicked your butts…and came home. Expect problems in Nashville as well. Good luck with that 10-2 my man

New York Yankees Blog –

I’ll agree with 1-4, but I don’t see how you can say Ole Miss will be a big-time bust. You didn’t see the Cotton Bowl last year, when #24 Ole Miss stroked the hell out of #7 Texas Tech? We didn’t lose much from last year – yeah I know we lost Michael Oher and Peria Jerry, but we’ve got the holes filled well – and we’ve got one of the top recruiting classes in the country. We’ve got one of the top 3 pure passers in the country in Jevan Snead, and if my observations at practice are correct, he’s even better than he was last year. We averaged 45 points/game over the last 4 games last year, and yet, we were known for our havoc-wreaking defense. I’m telling you now – we probably won’t end up in the top 5 like some of the rankings have us, but we won’t be lower than 15, I assure you. We’ve got an admittedly easy schedule: non-conference games feature Memphis, Southeastern Louisiana, UAB and Northern Arizona. Our conference schedule is about as easy as it can get in the SEC West: we pick up South Carolina, Vandy, and Tennessee from the East, playing at SC & Vandy and we get Tennessee at home, as well as home games against Bama, Arkansas and LSU. Our road games are: Memphis, SC, Vandy, Auburn, and Mississippi State. We should be 5-0 on the road. I don’t see us losing to anyone but Bama or maybe LSU at home, but neither of those games are failsafe wins for the visiting teams. We’ve got a schedule that should easily put us 10-2 or better. There’s no way we don’t end up top 15.

The Hatred for ND needs to stop here, all of you forget what the school stands for and where that money goes. The football program does alot for a school that does alot for society. Notre Dame will never have the return on investment other schools get because they still value education… The requirements keep convicts out that are great football players but still the school stands firm. there is something respectable about that. The basketball program suspended one of the best shooters in big east history for marijuana possesion. Show Me ONE other football school who has done that. Values and Moral behavior should say more to all the haters out there than this. WE do not have rapists and drug dealers and over look it because they are amazing athletes. Bottom line ND has the right to do what they do because they are ND. i would be willing to bet most of the haters out there couldnt have went to notre dame if they had 4 years tuition in cash because the school isnt like that. It takes brains and talent and being a human being… if the Ncaa had policies like that no one else would win a game

Good looking info on the preseason rankings. I am sure they will stay pretty close to your results when the AP is released. Here are the five teams that I feel will be in the preseason top 25, but will be big time busts.

1.North Carolina
2.Utah
3.Oregon
4.Pitt
5.Ole Miss

And yes, it is super lame that somehow Notre Dame continues to get such hype, before proving anything. Also, Boise State? Get real. Enough said.

Cincy is a tough game on anyone’s schedule, agreed. But to win the Big East they got lucky against West Virginia. And they couldn’t exactly hang with VTech. They are a good squad, but still have a ways before they can establish themselves. They did give OU a pretty decent game last year, I watched that one.

How about a little love for the Cincinnati Bearcats. We have one of the best coaches in college football. Besides that we were the Big east Champs, lost very few people, and are looking even stronger at the Qb position(Because we were down to our 4th string Qb by the third game). Aside from that Ohio is one of the strongest high school football states and were are taking a lots of recruits away from Ohio state. Regardless of whether you agree with me or not if you see cincy on your teams schedule you should just prepare for a long tough game because we bring it every time.

BradFord, you may have heard of a guy named Brady Quinn? They actually should have beaten USC if it weren’t for the blown call. Reggie Bush pushed Leinart into the endzone, which you can’t do. Granted, ND was overrated that year, which showed against LSU. But they did go to a BSC bowl, something only 10% of college football teams do each year. Yes, nothing significant for 20 years or so, but they have had some good teams and some good seasons. Just not as dominant as in the past. That could have something to do with the fact that they won all their titles when there were much less than 120 teams.

What?? “ND hasn’t been very good for awhile.” “ND hasn’t been good for a couple of years.” You people need to get a grip on history or maybe you’re just newbies on the scene. ND has done absolutely nothing, Squat, Zero since 1988 when ND and Lou Holtz stole a national championship from Miami with a very bad call (remember the Cleveland Gary endzone call?). That’s 21 (TWENTY ONE) years!!!!!

David, you forgot the Lakers and Cowboys :)

Too true though, the media crams them down our throats simply because they are popular. When popular teams play well, people pay attention. When unpopular teams do well (see Phillies and Rays World Series) then no one watches because no one cares.

Same with old college football. A lot more people watch a bowl game between, say, Texas and Notre Dame than Utah vs. Boise State for example. Some people feel ND needs to be good in order for CF to be popular. Earth to the ND crowd- you guys haven’t been good for a couple years now, and ratings are going up. So while I’m certain more people would watch a bowl game that included ND over some less popular school, the point of the sport is the sport, not the revenue and ratings. Unfortunately, some suits in a big room have decided otherwise…

The mainstream media claims sports need teams like Notre Dame and the Yankees to be important.

These teams bring higher ratings when doing well. This merely means that the casual fan (people who don’t normally follow the sport because they have no passion for it) tunes in to see what happens, usually just so they’ll have something to say when it comes up in conversation.

The sports don’t need any particular team to be good. The sports are great in and of themselves.

Shannon, that’s exactly the problem- ND doesn’t join a conference for only one reason, and you nailed it. As an independent they share no conference spoils, they get everything for themselves. With the system being what it is, all football teams should be in a conference for the betterment of the game. Yet ND only wants more money and what is best for them, not the sport. For shame…and they know it too. We all do. ND, Navy and Army need to join a conference already and make CF better for it.

As a life-long fan of ND and the daughter of ND alum, I strongly disagree with some of these statements from posters. Let’s get over the anger of Notre Dame not joining a conference. There are several reasons for this, one being that by remaining independent, the revenue belongs to them. The school has accumulated a massive dowry by staying independent. There are plenty of Notre Dame haters out there which I know is based on sheer jealousy. ND’s grad rate with student athletes rivals only ivy league schools and a handful of other elite academic institutions such as Stanford and Duke. The only controversy I will invite next season is the firing of Weiss if he doesn’t produce some important wins and a better than mediocre season. ND has some ridiculous talent now (due to Weiss’s awesome recruiting which is ironic since he can’t seem to develop his recruits after he reels them in). In all seriousness, with the talent he will have this year, this is a nat’l championship caliber team. It’s up to Weiss to develop and foster that spirit.
